Campus Fire Safety Day is Sept. 18

Hands-on learning since 1976

The EH&S Fire Extinguisher Training program began in 1976. A total of 85 Iowa State employees completed the program then.

In 2023, the number of employees and students who completed our Fire Safety and Fire Extinguisher Training was 9,701.

Fire safety is important for everyone. However, the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) reported that "U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 3,331 structure fires each year in dormitories, fraternity houses, sorority houses, and barracks between 2018 and 2022." This statistic demonstrates that students, parents, and staff are all crucial to our campus' fire preparedness.

As part of its Campus Fire Safety Month observance, Environmental Health and Safety will host a fire safety event on Wednesday, Sept. 18 (9-11 a.m., south of Parks Library). The event is open to the whole community to raise more awareness of fire safety on our campus.

Those who attend can put out a simulated fire, learn additional fire safety tips from experts, and receive a free T-shirt (while supplies last).
