Laboratory Safety Orientation

Hands-on training for laboratory users

Laboratory Safety Orientation (LSO) is designed for ISU faculty, staff, and students (both graduate and undergraduate) who will work in laboratories. This training includes the following hands-on activities:

  • Hazardous waste disposal
  • Fire extinguisher use
  • Chemical storage
  • Spill cleanup

    Step 1: Register for LSO 2024

    Scheduled course offerings:

    • Tuesday, August 20 from 12:30-4:30 pm
    • Thursday, August 22 from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
    • Tuesday, August 27 from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
    • Thursday, August 29 from 12:30-4:30 pm
    Employees: Self-enroll in Workday Learning Students: Contact CELT-help@iastate.edu to be assigned training in Canvas

    Step 2: Complete prereq training

    Complete Safety Data Sheets online training before attending LSO

    Complete the online Safety Data Sheets training course before your orientation date. Employees can complete their safety training courses in Workday Learning, and non-paid students can complete their safety training courses in Canvas. If a student does not have an academic course instructor to assign the SDS training, please have them contact CELT-help@iastate.edu to assign the training module.

    Frequently asked questions

    Paid employees

    If you receive a paycheck from the university, you can enroll yourself in Workday Learning for your preferred course offering.

    Non-paid students

    If you are a student, you will need to complete safety training in Canvas. If you do not have an academic course instructor to assign the training module to you, please contact CELT-help@iastate.edu to enroll in Laboratory Safety Orientation and Safety Data Sheets Training.

    Each of the course offerings will follow a schedule similar to this:

    • Welcome (30 minutes)
    • Fire extinguisher and waste disposal workshops (75 minutes)
    • Safety data sheets workshops (75 minutes)
    • Wrap-up discussion (15 minutes)
